Install CLP-315 on CUPS Debian Lenny
CLP 315 is an excellent, inexpensive color laser printer, you can share this printer by installing it into a print server. If you happen to have a headless Linux server in your LAN which you probably use for file sharing, you can share printers using that same Linux box in your home network. It’s a great addition to your SOHO network.
It’s a gorgeous little printer too.
How to hook up the CLP 315 Color laser to a Linux print server
Assuming you have successfully installed CUPS on Linux, you can install CLP 315 driver in 2 ways. First, you need to download the updated driver from the Samsung site. Navigate to Support, then Download center. Follow the instructions which will ask a sequence of questions to identify what kind of product, then finally down to the model of the printer, in this case, it’s the samsung CLP 315.
Get the driver for Linux, in this case the UnifiedLinuxDriver.tar.
If your Linux box has a monitor, mouse, keyboard and has X11 installed, you can follow these steps.
tar -xvf UnifiedLinuxDriver.tar
The tar file will be expanded, and will eventually create a folder named cdroot. Navigate to that directory, and drill down further, inside it is another folder named Linux.
cd cdroot/Linux sudo install.sh
These commands will launch the installer, you will
be in GUI mode after that, just follow the
prompts and make the sensible decisions.
Install it on a headless server
If you can only logon to it remotely, you will need to place the PPD (Postscript Printer Description) file into the CUPS filter directory. If you have extracted the UnifiedLinuxDriver.tar, like in the step above, you can find the ppd for Samsung CLP 315 in cdroot/Linux/i386/at_root/usr/lib/cups/filter/ the name of the file is rastertosamsungsplc, you just need to copy this file and place into /usr/lib/cups/filter/, the command to do it is
cp /cdroot/Linux/i386/at_root/usr/lib/cups/filter/rastertosamsungsplc /usr/lib/cups/filter/
assuming you have configured CUPS properly to allow remote access via browser, you can type http://nameofyourserver:631
Click Administration, then Find printers. Fill in the details, remember that the “name” field is the name of the printer on the print server queue, make it easy to type, like “clp315″.
Further along in the wizard, when you click the continue button, choose samsung 310 series splc on the printer driver.
That’s it. You now have a shared color printer on your home network.
