Samsung CLP-315 on Ubuntu Server 9.04, Jaunty Jackalope

The procedures for Installing CLP-315 on Debian Lenny did not work when I installed CLP-315 to an Ubuntu 9.04 server (Jaunty), after a few minutes of uploading ‘rastertosamsungsplc’ to /usr/lib/cups/filter and tweaking the permissions–still, not working. The mishap of this installation starts when you are about to add a printer using the CUPS administration page (http://printserveraddress:631), clicked ‘Find printer’ then choose the driver–the CLP-310 series does not appear to be included.

A quick check on the contents /usr/share/ppd/samsung and sure enough, CLP-310xxx wasn’t there, I’m not really sure what caused this because I used the same installer (UnifiedLinuxDriver.tar.gz from the Samsung site) that I used when I installed CLP-315 on Debian Lenny–copying the old ppd file to the new Ubuntu server didn’t do any good either. The 310 series driver will show up on setup, but during the printing of the test page, it won’t print the usual CUPS test page, it just prints an error message.

After 2 hours of fruitless labor, I just tried re-downloading UnifiedLinuxDriver.tar.gz from the Samsung site, expand it and execute autorun.

# tar -xzvf UnifiedLinuxDriver.tar.gz
# cd cdroot
# ./autorun

It was designed for Linux installation with GUI, so it might check your Qt library; I didn’t have any as my Ubuntu box is a server (a headless server, in fact), the installer failed gracefully and defaulted to an gui-less installation. Somewhere in the install process, it asked what model of the printer I had connected, just typed CLP-310splc.

After this, I went back to the CUPS administration page (http://addressOfPrinter:631), clicked Administration, then clicked ‘Find New Printers’, it quickly detected the CLP-315 (shown as CLP 310) connected on USB 2, changed the printer name (which will become the queue name) to clp315–that way I can type it quite easily when connecting to this printer from laptop machines–chose CLP-310splc from the list of drivers, printed a test page, and all done.

So it looks like the UnifiedLinuxDriver.tar that I’ve downloaded months ago did not work with my new Ubuntu 9.04 server–it also looks like Samsung is actively updating the driver for CLP-315 and other printers.

If you want to show appreciation for my efforts dear reader, you could buy me a tall hazel nut Americano ($2) via PayPal. Thanks
